EMM Help: Terminology

Terminology

This page should help you understand some of the terminology that we use in the application.

  • Campaign - A campaign is the basis for the Enhanced Mailing Manager. A compaign is comprised of the base message to be emailed (in HTML and text) as well as other information required to send personalized messages. This includes, title, subject, Audience, sender identity information, custom queries and other information.
  • Audience - This is a pre-defined collection of recipients for a given campaign.
  • Message - This is a single message that has been sent as part of a larger campaign.
  • Title - This is how a campaign is referred to from within the administrative interface. This provides you with the ability to reference emails easily with names that you might not wish to share with the public in the subject line of outbound emails.
  • Subject - This is the subject line that appears attached to each message in a campaign.
  • From Name - This is the name associated with the sender's identity.
  • From Address - This is the email address associated wit the sender's identity.
  • Custom Query - This is what is used to more precisely target recipients in the standard audiences.
  • Message Body (HTML) - This is the content of a multi-part message that is sent in HTML format. Most mail recipients will see this version of the message unless their mail client is set up to show the text version.
  • Message Body (Text) - This is the content of a multi-part message that is sent in text format. While very few email recipients will see this version of the message, it is important to include a text version for every campaign as this gives you more "mojo" with spam filters. Spammers don't take the time to generate this alternate content so filters now give you credit for doing so.
  • Inserts - These are predefined snippets of code that you can place into your messages where the "snippet" will be replaced with specific information. This is used for not only personalizing messages in campaigns but also for handling commonly used items like unsubscribe links and "web bugs".
  • Web Bugs - This is a specialized insert that creates a 1x1 image in the HTML version of the Message Body. This image is delivered by our servers and records the view so that you'll have an approximation of the number of times this message was viewed.
