Creating Sitemap for Google Sites

2. June 2010 by 5 Comments

So you’ve got a Google Sites website and you want to submit a sitemap to your Google (and other site engines) but how do you do it? Sure, with static sites you can go ahead and use a 3rd party system that will crawl the site and create an xml file for you but if you do that, how do place that file into your Google Sites site?

Well, you could upload it to a file cabinet page but Google comes to the rescue, as you can imagine, in that there is an automated sitemap that stays sync’ed with your website that you can submit to tools but it can kind of confusing to find it.

The URL structure for this is as follows:

  • For sites underneath Google Apps that do NOT have a domain name mapped to them, it would take the format:
         http://sites.google.com/a/(your domain)/(site name)/system/feeds/sitemap
  • For sites underneath traditional Google Sites it would take the following format:
         http://sites.google.com/site/(site name)/system/feeds/sitemap
  • If you have mapped a domain name to your site, it is even easier. For a site like http://www.insurancenewportbeach.net/ the full URL to the sitemap would use the following format:
         http://www.insurancenewportbeach.net/system/feeds/sitemap

Of course, Google Webmaster Tools make this even easier because if you’ve set up the domain properly in Tools, all you will need to know when you submit the sitemap is

system/feeds/sitemap

That’s all there is to it! Have you used this technique before or find it useful in your everyday life? If so, please drop us a note in the comments section below…

Yes, your sitemap shows up at /system/feeds/sitemap but you are correct, it is empty.

The reason this is happening is that you must FIRST get your site verified in Webmaster Tools. This requires going to http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools and signing up for an account. Once you've done that, "Add A Site" using the information from your website. Choose to use the Verify by META tag method and copy the information from that page into you site's "Google Webmaster Tools verification" field in the General Site Settings portion of the "Manage Site" admin page.

Take care of that and you'll find that your Google Sites Sitemap is no longer empty!

@mjg  thanks for your response, but i already have google webmasters/ tools added to my site and still problem. The goolge webmater show this error
"Missing XML tag
This required tag is missing. Please add it and resubmit."

I even tried delete my site from webmaster tools and re-submitting it but still didn`t work
Funny thing is that there is no way i can edit sitemap and google dont do anything either..

You suggest any workaround ?
I`ll appreciate that

I went ahead and made a new article about how to address this at exhibita.com/.../...oogle-Sites-Sitemap-Empty.aspx.

My guess is that if your site in Webmaster Tools is verified, that you've removed the Meta tag from your "Google Webmaster Tools verification" field since the meta tag isn't showing up on your website. I should see something like the following when I view the source code of your website and I don't:
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="RZWTXRO45rikPUXx2M8wpZ1sJ7_rrwcy-r9Ws_mwtus" />

BTW - the "comment" from @ExhibitA is actually a track-back since the new post I wrote linked back to this one. Sorry, it wasn't a question directed at you ;)
